Abstract
720,597. Measuring continuous lengths of materials; rollers. CARTER & CO., Ltd., B. & F. Dec. 12, 1952 [Dec. 12, 1951], No. 29054/51. Class 42 (2). The measuring wheel of a machine for measuring continuous lengths of material such as cable or tape comprises a rim 12, Fig. 2, a resilient layer 15 secured around the rim, and a band 16 secured around layer 15 so as to effect a degree of pre-compression thereof, whereby, in use, slight deformation of the wheel takes place. As shown, the wheel comprises a cast light-alloy spider 11 with the rim 12; layer 15 is of sponge rubber or synthetic resin, and band 16 is of hardened steel, the ends of which are joined by riveting. At each side of rim 12 are bolted annular flanges 17 to prevent excessive lateral expansion of the layer 15. Wheel A is mounted in a bearing 23, Figs. 3, 5, at the end of an arm 22 pivoted to a pillar 21 and is pressed by its own weight and that of a weight 34 against a roller 41 which is mounted in fixed bearings 40 and fits between the flanges 17 of wheel A. The shaft 24 of wheel A is coupled by a pin-and-slot coupling 26, 28 to the shaft 30 of a counter 31 which registers the length of material measured. Wheel A is encased by a guard 37 and can be raised and lowered between felt or rubber buffers 36 by a handle 27. Inlet and outlet roller boxes 44a, 44b for the material to be measured (e.g. electric cable B) comprise vertical rollers 45, 46 and horizontal rollers 47, 48. A guide channel 49 and guide wheel 53 are provided between the inlet roller box 44a and wheel A. Doctor blades 38, 42 are provided to scrape wheel A and roller 41 respectively In a modification, the cable may pass above, instead of below, the measuring wheel, a guide roller adjustable in height being provided above the measuring wheel ; according to the Provisional Specification, with the cable passing above the measuring wheel, a tension wheel is provided to urge the cable against the measuring wheel periphery.
