824,482. Measuring continuous lengths. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO. Ltd., W. T., and FRY, F. H. Jan. 13, 1956 [Jan. 13, 1955], No. 1132/55. Class 42 (2). Apparatus for measuring the length of a filamentary body such as a cable 15 comprises two opposed measuring rollers 12, 18 mounted in a frame 10, 11 so that the cable passes between and in contact with them, a differential operatively connected with rollers 12, 18 and measuring means, such as a revolution counter, driven by the differential. The differential operates to average any speed variations between the two rollers one to inequalities of the cable &c. Roller 18 is mounted in a frame 17 pivoted at 16 and carrying a guide frame 20 for guide rollers 24, 25 which are adjusted so that the cable 15 curved slightly around roller 18 and any tightening of the cable will increase its pressure against roller 18. The differential is mounted in a housing 33 and is connected to rollers 12, 18 via chain and sprocket drives.
