760,917. Measuring continuous lengths. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., and FRY, F. H. Jan. 28, 1954 [Jan. 28, 1953], No. 2480/53. Class 42 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] Apparatus for measuring the lengths of cables &c. comprises a resilient driving connection between a booster wheel and a measuring wheel, so that when the cable &c. snaches, the measuring wheel can accelerate and keep pace with it. As shown, a cable 10 is held against a booster wheel 11 and measuring wheel 12 by rollers 13, 14, and the booster and measuring wheels are in driving connection through sprockets and a chain 24-26. The booster wheel 11 is of such a diameter as to tend to cause a slight overdriving of the machine, the measuring wheel 12 normally being held back by internal friction. The sprocket 24 is coupled to the booster wheel 11 by two blade-springs 18, 19 having their inner ends secured to a spindle 17 carrying the booster wheel. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the blade-springs are replaced by a spiral spring, arranged either to coil or uncoil as the cable passes through the apparatus. The device may also be applied to measuring apparatus having the simple wheel 12 replaced by an endless belt engaged by the cable &c. and embracing a set of rollers and a measuring wheel as described in Specification 744,743.
