Abstract
918,162. Tensioning belts. MACALISTERS Ltd. Aug. 22, 1961, No. 30272/61. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXX] An automatic belt-tensioning arrangement comprises gripping pulleys 9, 10 mounted on a rockable member 14 adjacent to the periphery of a driving pulley 4. The rockable member is pivoted about the axis 7 of the driving pulley and may comprise a pair of substantially triangular plate 14 (Fig. 1) or pairs of arms 22, 23 pivoted on an arm 19 rotatable about the driving pulley axis 7 (Fig. 6). Increased tension in the belt 1 due to rotation of the driving pulley 4, or breakage of the belt 1, causes the rockable member to swing clockwise to increase the tension in the belt, or take up the slack, and increase the frictional force between the belt and the pulley 4. The invention may be applied to transmission or conveyer belts or to ropeways.
