Abstract
635,197. Measuring continuous lengths. POURTIER, G. June 16, 1945, No. 15356. Convention date. March 1, 1943. [Class 42 (ii)] An apparatus for measuring continuous objects of great length comprises an endless belt for contacting the travelling object over a substantial straight length thereof, and arranged to be driven thereby, a meter wheel driven by frictional engagement with the belt, and means which presents at least one travelling surface to engage the object at its side opposite to the belt. to maintain the said straight length in contact therewith. The cable c, guided between pairs of rollers 14, 15 is supported by an endless belt 2 running over rollers 3, 4, 5, and kept taut by jockey rollers 6 and 7 which are carried by swinging levers pivoted at 8 and 9. An upper belt 22 runs over rollers 23, 24, 25 and presses down upon the top of the cable. Rollers 26, 27 tension the belt while a wheel 39 rests on its inner surface, and drives the meter 40, these units being mounted on a support 41, 42, pivoting round the spindle 30. The upper rollers are mounted between cheek plates and the whole assembly is pivoted to the arm 35 at 31 and the arm 35 pivoted to the frame 1 at 36. The aggregate is counterbalanced by a weight 37 on rod 38. The belt 2 may be omitted, the cable being then supported by rollers.
