The height of arc of a track section is measured for the purpose of aligning the track by arranging a series of chords or tangents one after the other along the section and measuring the angles therebetween. A suitable apparatus comprises a series of equally spaced axles 14, Fig. 6, which are pivotally connected together by rods 15. Each coupling rod 15 is extended at one end byond its pivot to a point m, so that a device may be arranged to measure the angle between the extension and the adjacent rod 15. It is described in the Specification how the tangents of such angles may be used and this may be measured by each rod being extended a known amount d, Fig. 5, and measuring the distance e by means of electrical resistances with sliding contacts, induction coils, piezo-electric pressure gauges or the like.
