671,872. Grinding machines. GEIGER, R., (trading as GEIGER MASCHINENFABRIK, A.). June 16, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1950], No. 15086/50. Class 60. [Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] For preventing the ingress of foreign matter into the slideways, lead screw or other guide means of a carriage 2 of a grinding machine, a flexible band 10 is attached to one or both sides of the carriage and moves with the carriage, its edges being engaged in grooves 4, 5 provided either in opposite walls of the stationary element 3 of the guide means or in stationary covers 14, 15 for the guide means. The grooves 4, 5 in the walls of the slideway 3 may be undercut to form drip troughs having drainage ducts 8, 9.. The band is made of rubber or steel and is either coiled on a spring-controlled mounting on the machine bed or arranged in the manner of an endless band with its ends attached to opposite sides of the slide. The upper surface of the band may be either concave or convex and the edges may be thickened to form beadings or may be flanged upwardly or downwardly. The band may cover the whole width of the machine bed and engage grooves in raised edges of the bed. Fig. 3 shows the band 10 fitted in grooves in plates 14, 15 covering a lead screw 13. A bush 12 is provided for wiping the top of the band.
