Abstract
1,092,172. Measuring friction. NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUTE SHINNOI PROMYSHLENNOSTI. Jan. 19, 1965, No. 2265/65. Heading G1S. Apparatus for determining the wear resistance of polymeric materials under conditions of both rolling and slipping along an abrasive surface comprises a drum 6 mounting an abrasive material 8, a carriage 10 mounting a rotatable mandrel holding a test piece 11, a device for moving the carriage, and a braking mechanism, the drum 6 being mounted in bearings so as to be rotated solely by its contact with the test piece 11. The carriage 10 is driven linearly against the abrasive surface 8 by a motor through a three-stage pulley 13 and gear-box 14, the gear-box 14 controlling fine displacement speeds. An adjustable loading device 16 presses the test piece 11 against the drum 6. A tachometer is provided to measure the drum speed and a counter counts the number of revolutions. A brake drum is attached to axle of drum 6 and is connected through a cable to a pendulum device for measuring the braking force. In use, the carriage 10 supporting the rotating test piece 11 is moved linearly across the drum 6, and the forces developed in the brake band, due to contact between the two surfaces, are measured by movement of the pendulum.
