Abstract

1282588 Laying a helical winding on a core WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd 6 Aug 1970 [11 Aug 1969] 40082/69 Heading B8G Apparatus for laying a helical winding on an elongated component comprises: (a) means for rotating the component about its axis 22; (b) a carrier 5 remotely positioned to one side of the component and providing an attachment point Y for one end of the winding material, the other end being attached to the component at X; (c) guiding means 3, 4 allowing movement of the carrier 5 towards the axis 22; and (d) control means moving the carrier 5 towards the axis 22 at a rate governed by the speed of revolution of the component and the perimeter of the component over which winding takes place. In Fig. 3 the carrier 5 is moved by a cable passing around a drum 6 rotating with the component. A rubber faced roller 8 presses the wound material against the component. The cable may, alternatively, operate in a friction drive running on the periphery of the item being wound. Any mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic drive system may be used to replace the pulley system described. Lefthand helix and righthand helix may be simultaneously wound if a carriage 5 is provided at each end of the component. Each spool carried by the carrier 5 may incorporate a friction disc for maintaining tension. Several tapes may be wound on at the same time, for example carbon or boron tapes.
