Abstract

A system for moving a load 119 which may be air cushion supported, about a restricted floor area comprises winches 115, 116 which through cables 117, 118 connecting the winches to the load and passing over pulleys or fairleads 124, 125 mounted at the perimeter of the floor area and pulleys or fairleads 126 mounted on an overhead movable carriage 128, control the direction and amount of movement of the load. The load is attached to the ends of cable 117 at points 120, 121 and to the ends of cable 118 at points 122, 123 the cables being wound on their respective winch drums intermediate their ends. When the winch drums 115, 116 are driven in the same direction, the load 119 will move in the direction of arrows C or D depending on the direction of rotation of the drums, and when the drums are driven in opposite directions, the forces exerted on the pulleys 126 cause the carriage 128 to move with the load 119 in the direction of either arrow A or B depending on the drum rotation directions. The pulleys 125 are mounted on jacks 127 which by differential manipulation thereof, cause the load 119 to be swivelled about its vertical axis provided the winch drums are rendered freely rotatable by a clutch 131. Both winches 115, 116 are driven from a common motor 129 through a gear-box 130 associated with a brake 132. In the embodiment of Fig. 8 (not shown), the jacks of the first embodiment are replaced by tensioning pulleys and swivelling of the load is effected by locking one of the winch drums and rotating the other. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), a single reversible winch drum is used which engages an endless cable loop. The cable engages the load via a pair of pulleys thereon which are braked to render the winch drive effective on the load. The other direction of drive is effected by releasing the brakes and moving the load and overhead carriage either manually or by use of a separate winch drive shown in Fig. 3 (not shown). Fig. 5 and 7 (not shown), show further embodiments in which a single winch shown associated with a single cable drives the load in one direction when the cable is braked.
