Abstract

A drag line scraper for moving loose material comprises a bucket 28, Fig. 1, suspended from a carriage 19, which is moved along a beam 18, pivoted on a tower 1 about a vertical axis, by a cable 13 and a winch 12, is returned by a cable 17 and a winch 16 and has a cable 15 attached between the leading edge of the bucket and a winch 14. In operation, the winches 12, 14 rotate together and as cables 13, 15 are wound in the carriage 19 and the bucket 28 move to the right in Fig. 1. The bucket moves horizontally because the cable 17 is paid out by the winch 16. When the carriage passes under a fixed stop 23 a movable stop 31 on the cable 17 is arrested so that cable 17 is not paid out any further. Since cables 13, 15 are still being wound in by winches 12, 14 the bucket 28 rises diagonally until the sequence of operations is halted by a limit switch. Reversal of the drive causes the cable 17 to return the carriage to the left, cables 13, 15 being simultaneously paid out. When the stop 31 abuts a stop 24 the clutch slips so that cable 17 is halted. Continued rotation of the winches 12, 14 pays out cables 13, 15 so that the carriage moves to the left-hand end of the beam under the weight of the bucket. A band clutch is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown). This ensures that the winch 16 is clutched to the winches 12, 14 when the bucket is moving away from the tower but not when it is being wound in. Raising or lowering of the bucket may be controlled by an electromagnetically operated pivoted pawl which co-operates with stops on the winch 16 to prevent its rotation in either direction as desired. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, a beam 153 is rotated by a pinion 107 and a chain the ends of which are attached to the tower. The operation is substantially as previously described except that the carriage return winch 129, Fig. 6, is clutched to the winches 119, 120 by a pawl 124 and a toothed wheel 123. Slipping is provided for by a plate 126 and friction pads 127.
