Abstract

720,427. Manually-actuated valves. TINDALE, W. July 1, 1952 [July 4, 1951], No. 16582/52. Class 135. A multiple valve unit comprises a number of valves each in liquid connection with the others and adapted to be connected to its own tank and to a common connection to a pump, and each valve closure member is spring-loaded to a position closing-off the connection with its tank, but any selected valve can be unloaded to allow the pump suction to open the connection to the tank concerned. In an embodiment, two tanks are connected via separate inlets 8, Fig. 1, and valves 27A to a common outlet line 2 leading to a pump. Each valve 27A comprises a lift valve member provided with guiding webs 13 and urged towards its seat by a loading spring 22. The latter abuts against the inner surface of a cap 15 screwed into the valve body 4 and a cap-like member 24 loosely surrounding the inner end of a valve-actuating plunger 16 which is separate from the valve 27A. The material 18 of a gland packing for the plunger 16 is compressed by a spring 20. When a valve plunger is raised, the valve will be opened by the suction created by the pump. The plungers are raised by means of tappet arms 33 engaging discs 28 on the plungers, the tappet arms being arranged in staggered fashion around a rotary shaft 31 so that the valves can be opened selectively. Where opening means is provided for each valve separately, the rotary shaft 35, Fig. 2, can ride up and down in slots in the vertical arms of a yoke 37, and the tappet arms 39 can engage and ride on surface 40. As the arms 39 ride over the surfaces 40, the shaft 31 will be lifted, and the valve plunger 16, which is carried by the shaft, will be lifted also.
