1422669 Dispensing liquids FMC CORPORATION 19 Dec 1973 [4 June 1973] 58941/73 Heading B8T [Also in Division A4] A fluid transfer apparatus, e.g. for petrol, comprises a fluid delivery conduit 22, (40), Fig. 2 (not shown), a vapour return conduit (42), 24 fluid dispensing means 84, and a fluid outlet/vapour inlet assembly 20 having fluid outlet and vapour inlet portions 98, 100, and valve means 124 for closing the outlet portion 98 to prevent dripping. Preferably, the conduits 22, 24, (40), (42) form part of a pivotable boom assembly 12 enabling the assembly 20 to be positioned at any point in a working range. On inserting the assembly 20 into a tank filling hatch H, a rubber or like member 136 sealingly engages the rim R of the hatch H, and a seating portion 140 is caused to rise on a spout body 102 until it engages a flange 104, the valve means 124 simultaneously leaving a seat 142. Fluid may then be dispensed until the tank T is substantially full, fluid entering a vapour inlet 150 in the assembly 20 raising a float 154 to operate a contact valve 88 for shutting off the dispensing means 84. A vapour check valve 114 comprises a closure member 116 biased by a spring 120, the vapour pressure acting to raise the member 116 to allow vapour flow through ports 122 to the inlet portion 100. On raising the assembly 20, the seating portion slides downwardly, its lower edge 142 engaging an O-ring 130 around the valve member 124 to close off the portions 98, 100. Alternatively, Fig. 5, a valve member 218 may be spring-biased to close the outlet/inlet assembly, the seating portion 232 being connected to the valve stem 222 by a pin 226 sliding in slots 228. Further, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a pneumatically powered poppet valve may be employed, and the check valve (404), Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), may also be power operated by the pneumatic means (400).
