Abstract

1,218,434. Filling and emptying bottles; venting containers. FRASER SWEATMAN Inc. 9 Feb., 1968 [17 Feb., 1967], No. 6665/68. Headings B8T and B8X. A safety filling device particularly for a vaporizer for anaesthesia apparatus has interengaging means, preventing the interconnection of wrongly matched containers, and valves controlling the flow of liquid. The top of the vaporizer (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), has an opening 12 and a collar 14 inside which fits a tube 16 with a gasket seal 18 between the two. Liquid flow through a reduced inlet portion 20 is controlled by a ball check valve 22 urged upwardly against its seating by a spring 24. Liquid flows through openings 28 and 30 when the valve is open. A cap (40), Fig. 3 (not shown), fits over the tube 16 when the vaporizer is not in use. Pins 32 and 34 pushed onto the top of tube 16 engage loosely with openings 72 and 74 in the cap of a second container 50. The orientation of these pins and openings is such that only the correct liquid container can be connected to a particular vaporizer. A ring-shaped check valve 76 closes openings 72 and 74 except when the vaporizer is connected and pins 32 and 34 open the valve to allow air to pass through a passage 80 connected through tube 84 to a cup-shaped member (88), Fig. 5 (not shown), with a disc (90) threaded to the inside thereof, the disc having openings (98) which can be closed by a washer (100) slidably mounted on a tube 94. In a conduit 62 on the second container is a valve stem 114 coacting with ball valve 22 and urged downwardly by a spring 110. When the container and vaporizer are brought together, tube 69 slides into conduit 31 and valve stem 114 opens first the ball check valve, then the seal provided by a cup-shaped member 112 urged against a face in sleeve 64 by a spring 110. Liquid can then flow freely into the vaporizer. A similar arrangement is used to drain unused liquid from the vaporizer, to prevent draining into the wrong container, Fig. 8 (not shown). The second container has a cap (120), Fig. 2 (not shown), to close it when not in use.
