764,615. Valves. HUTCHINSON, A. S. M. Aug. 31, 1954 [Sept. 3, 1953], No. 25233/54. Class 135. A piston valve has a resiliently flexible piston sandwiched between two rigid discs, and an annular stop surface coaxial with the piston is provided to be engaged by one of the discs when the valve is closed whereby the piston is compressed axially to cause it to make fluidtight engagement with the wall of a cylinder. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment consisting of a five-way valve arrangement in which a stem 16 actuated by rack and pinion gearing 20, 21 carries a pair of resilient pistons 17, 18 each sandwiched between discs 30 and separated by a sleeve 33. In the position shown the pistons are compressed by engagement of the lowest disc 30 with an annular abutment 28, whilst in the upper position of the movable valve parts the pistons are compressed by engagement of the uppermost disc 30 with an annular abutment 27. In a modification, a single piston 62, Fig. 5, is carried by a stem 56 actuated by a screwed spindle 54 and is arranged to be compressed axially by an abutment 67 when in its uppermost position in which it interrupts communication between an inlet 59 and an outlet 60. In a further modification, the invention is applied to a tap in which the resilient piston is withdrawn entirely from the cylinder in the open position of the tap.
