Abstract

720,360. Electric motors. ROBERTSON, J. W., and BELLASIS, R. O. Feb. 23, 1949, No. 4876/49. Class 35. In an electric motor two armatures 10, 11 are arranged face to face with a small air gap, each armature having a continuous toroidal winding 16, 18 contacted directly by one or more pairs of brushes 21 at positions alternating with the brush positions of the other armature. Each winding consists of channel-shaped segments 16 joined in series by bars 18 laid in machined slots 15. Each core consists of an insulated silicon-iron strip wound spirally on to a former 13. The motor may be regarded as contra-rotating, although one armature may be restrained. The armatures are secured to coaxial shafts 5, 4 and are separated by a thrust bearing 9. The casing 1 carries the shafts in a bearing 3, there being an outer bearing (not shown). The brushes contact the radial faces (as shown) alternatively the outer peripheral faces of the windings.
