Alternating-current motors; armatures.-An induction or other motor is provided with an idle armature 4 on each side of the working armature 1 so as to increase the leakage field of the magnetic system 2 at starting and thereby to regulate the starting velocity of the motor. The idle armatures are rigidly connected with the main armature, and may be wound or unwound ; their cores may be solid or laminated. For regulating purposes, the distance apart of the main and idle armatures may be varied either while the motor is at rest or is running; or the whole armature system may be displaceable on the armature shaft. The idle armatures may be surrounded by stationary rings 6 of brass or the like having openings which allow the lines of force to act upon the idle armatures at those places only, and the size and number of these openings may be capable of variation. Two rings having interruptions and displaceable relatively to each other may be employed in connexion with each idle armature.
