719,396. Stop-press printing. BUSH, T. B., and BUSH, H. N. Oct. 27, 1952 [Nov. 17, 1951], No. 27020/51. Class 100 (2). Stencilling; Inking-apparatus.-In a stencil cylinder for a stop press printing machine and having a recessed printing-surface and an internal ink reservoir, a plurality of closelyspaced radially-disposed holes being provided to convey ink to the stencil, if desired through an intervening perforated sheet and blanket or the like, the printing-surface is formed with a plurality of shallow circumferential recesses or channels separated by a circumferential rib or ribs having lateral passages therethrough to facilitate distribution of the ink laterally between the channels. A single column cylinder is provided with three channels 5 separated by ribs 6 which intersect holes 4 in every second lateral row thereof, the intersected holes thus forming passages between the channels. The channels may be # in. wide and 0.004 in. deep, the ribs # in. wide, and the holes <SP>5</SP>/ 32 in. in diameter and <SP>1</SP>/ 4 in. between centres. The ribs themselves are slightly recessed with respect to the original outer surface of the cylinder to receive the perforated sheet or blanket. The channels and ribs need only extend over as much of the surface as is to be covered by the printing part of the stencil. The intersected holes could be elongated instead of circular.
