Abstract

The impression on a material printed with a moisture-setting ink, and having a rough surface with raised portions separated by recesses, e.g. fibrous card stock, is dried by applying a setting liquid to the printed material by means of a roller coacting with another roller on the other side of the material. As shown, a web of material 11 is printed on both sides by cylinders 15, 151 and is severed by cutting cylinders 23, 231 into, for example, cards for use in data-processing machines. Between the cylinders 15, 151 and the cylinders 23, 231, two cylinders 19, 191 apply setting liquid to the web 11. Each cylinder 19, 191 has a hydrophilic surface and is contacted by a cylinder 35 having a moisture-retaining covering of molleton, soft rubber, or knitted sleeve. Another cylinder 37 with a hard hydrophilic surface engages the cylinder 35 and setting liquid is supplied to the nip of the cylinders 35, 37 by a spray 39. Setting liquid may, however, be applied to the cylinder 19 by a wick, or an endless band, or a litho-type dampening system may be used for this purpose. The cylinders 19, 191 may be either magnesium rolls or chromium-plated steel rolls. The setting liquid, examples of which are given, may be slightly acid in order to etch the cylinders 19, 191.
