888,136. Inking-apparatus. MASCHINENFABRIK GOEBEL G.m.b.H. Oct. 21, 1959 [Nov. 13, 1958], No. 35746/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 100(2) A method of producing profiles on inking rollers for use in a multi-colour gravure printing process wherein a plurality of inking rollers are used, each having raised portions corresponding to the areas to be printed in one colour, comprises producing from the original engraved plate a transfer roller, and thence a further plate impressed at sufficient depth to distinguish the boundary lines between the colours, engraving said lines by hand, producing from said further plate for each colour a further transfer roller having said boundary lines thereon as raised lines, mechanically removing from said further transfer roller all raised lines other than the boundary lines of the colour concerned, hardening the transfer roller, and running the latter and the inking roller together, the raised lines acting as knives to cut the lines in the inking roller. The inking roller may be formed with a flexible or plastic surface layer which can be stripped off to leave the inking area in relief. In order to avoid any gap between the colours when printed, the colour areas are made to overlap slightly, either by engraving two closely adjacent boundary lines on said further plate, or by modifying the hardened raised lines on the various transfer rollers.
