The heating element of an electric smoothing iron is pressed against the sole plate by a clamping assembly which is releasable as a whole or part of which is releasable to permit removal and replacement of the heating element, the clamping assembly including at opposite edges anchoring members preventing upward movement of the clamping assembly relatively to the sole plate by being non-threadably interlocked therewith. In Fig. 1, anchoring members 14 are embedded in the sole plate 10 and have flanges 19 which engage a clamping assembly comprising screws 15 and a clamping plate 13. The screws bear on a pressure plate 12 and are individually adjustable to vary the distribution of pressure on an asbestos pad 16 and a heating element 11. In a modification, Fig. 3, the anchoring members and clamping plate are formed integrally and flanges 27 of anchoring portions 26 engage recesses 28 formed in the sole plate 29. Wedges or leaf springs between the clamping and pressure plates may take the place of the screws.
