717,443. Metal heating furnaces. THERMAL RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. June 16, 1952 [June 18, 1951], No. 15137/52. Class 51 (2) A continuous billet heating furnace 10 comprises a heating chamber 11 in the form of a refractory cylinder 12 having inner walls which taper towards the charging end, burners 13, preferably of the type disclosed in Specifications 683,441 or 690,950, discharging gases of substantially complete combustion at high speed into the wider exit end of the heating chamber 11, a flue 14 leading to recuperator tubes 15, and an air heating conduit 27 formed around the cylinder 12. The billets 16 are traversed through the furnace by wheels 19 having axles 23 extending through the outer casing, forming the conduit 27 and driven by bevel gearing. The refractory cylinder 12 may be formed with serrated inner walls, Fig. 3 (not shown) to improve the heat transfer.
