Abstract

700,390. Controlling combustion. INTERNATIONAL CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd, and ATKINSON, D. C. Aug. 21, 1952 [July 19, 1951], No. 17206/51. Class 51 (1) A furnace for heating steel billets preparatory to rolling and comprising a heating chamber through which the billets are passed continuously with their longitudinal axes transverse of their direction of travel is provided with a metal contact member disposed in the floor of the heating chamber so as to make contact with the heated billets, a thermocouple to measure the heat of the contact member and means controlled by the thermocouple so as to regulate the fuel and air supplies to a burner or burners in such manner as to maintain the temperature of the billets at a desired value. As shown in Fig. 2 a furnace is provided at the discharge end thereof with burners 8 divided into three groups A, B, C, in order that billets 4 may, if required, be heated to slightly different temperatures along their lengths. Each of the zones of the furnace . thus formed is provided with a contact member 11 and with a thermocouple 14 which controls, through an electric regulator and a valve controi mechanism not shown, the supply of gas to a supply pipe 30. A flow meter in the gas supply pipe controls a valve mechanism in an air supply pipe 31 so that the air supply is varied in sympathy with the gas supply.
