Abstract

716,858. Making alloys. GES. DER L. VON ROLL'SCHEN EISENWERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 18, 1952 [Dec. 29, 1951], No. 32127/52. Class 82(1). In a process of adding at least one alloying metal in a gaseous state to a melt of metal or metal alloy at a temperature above the boiling point of the added metal, the vapour pressure arising on the contact of the solid added metal is used to achieve at least in part the pressure necesslightly above the static pressure of the column of molten metal at the point of introduction, As shown, a container 4 closed by a supply cock 5 delivers powdered metal 7 through a slide valve 6 and a pipe 3 of heat-resistant material sary, which is only to the melt 2, the vapour pressure set up causing the metal-vapour to bubble up from the end of the pipe. An inert gas may be used to assist delivering the addition metal. The addition of magnesium to melts of iron, nickel, copper, silicon and silicon-calcium is described.
