Abstract
780,920. Discharging molten metals. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 12, 1956 [Feb. 2, 1955], No. 1155/56. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXII] An apparatus for dispensing shots of molten metal shotwise through a sloping pipe 12, particularly easily oxidizable metals such as magnesium and magnesium-base alloys, comprises a melting-pot 4, a valve assembly 17 on the discharge end of the pipe, said valve comprising a body member 18 having an axial bore 19 from end to end and a port 20 in the side communicating with the discharge end of the pipe, the upper end of the bore being above the level of the molten metal in the pot, a valve seat 24 with a conical recess having an included angle of between 20 and 120 degrees, and a valve 28 of hemispherical form carried by a stem 29. The length of the passageway 25 in the valve seat is not more than 0.25 inches, and the distance between the top of the axial bore and the working level of the molten metal is at least as much as the valve stem travel in opening the valve. The pipe 12 and valve assembly 17 are lagged and provided with electrical heating means 22. A protective gas is supplied to the space above the melt in the bore 19, and around the outlet 25. A valve 14 is fitted to the end of the pipe 12 in the melting-pot.
