Abstract
767,993. Spheroidal graphite cast iron; making alloys. FOUNDRY SERVICES, Ltd., and BERMAN, A. June 20, 1955 [July 30, 1954], No. 22350/54. Classes 72 and 82 (1). A process for adding a material to molten metal comprises feeding the material to the metal in a confined space over all or part of the surface of the metal. As shown, applied to the addition of magnesium to cast iron, to produce spheroidal graphite, a chamber 1 of refractory material, open at one end and having a curved tube 3 fitted at the other end, is placed with its open end below the surface of the molten metal which may be covered with a layer of coke 8. The free end of the tube has a removable cap 4. A pellet of magnesium, e.g. made from magnesium swarf, is placed in the tube and cap screwed on. The magnesium is then allowed to slide into the chamber where it reacts with the cast iron. Air is excluded from the reaction in order to prevent explosion and to limit the violence of the reaction.
