Abstract

771,115. Refining metals; alloys. TIROLER ROHREN-UND METALLWERKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 2, 1953 [Oct. 2, 1952], No. 27114/53. Classes 72 and 82(1) [Also in Group XII] Magnesium, aluminium and/or ferrotitanium in fine-grained form are conveyed into a metal melt, particularly one of iron for refining or nodularizing, by a carrier gas such as nitrogen'which is not effective as a protective gas at the temperatures in and above the melt, the solid-gas mixture being cooled below the temperatures at which the gas reacts with the solid until just before it contacts the melt. The Figure shows a feeding device in which the gas supplied at 18 to a hollow stem 17 whose tip 16 is adjustable vertically away from a funnel 14 containing the fine-grained solid entrains the solid by an injector effect and carries it through feed-pipe 1 to a nozzle 2. A cooling jacket is divided into spaces 4 and 5 by a pipe 6, compressed air being supplied at 8 to flow downwardly through space 4 and holes 9 in a disc 7 and then upwardly through space 5 to leave at 10. The pipe 11 which is immersed in the melt is protected by a coating 12 of refractory such as graphite or fireclay. A handwheel 19 which adjusts the vertical position of tip 16 controls the rate of addition of the solid.
