Abstract

Nickel-containing stainless steel is produced by melting a charge containing chromium in an electric arc furnace the electrodes of which consist of an alloy of nickel and iron substantially free from carbon and which dissolve in the molten charge. The charge may comprise chromium ore, silicon in a form capable of reducing iron and chromium oxides and a fluxing material such as iron. The silicon may be in the form of an iron-silicon alloy containing e.g. 40-80 per cent silicon, or an iron-silicon-chromium alloy containing e.g. 30-60 per cent silicon and 20-60 per cent chromium. A basic material such as lime may be included and chromium may also be introduced into the charge as stainless steel scrap. Preferably the carbon content of the charge should be less than 0.03 per cent by weight. The alloy product may contain 7-30 per cent nickel, 12-35 per cent chromium and the remainder being substantially iron.
