Abstract

714,962. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO.. Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. April 16, 1953 [May 9, 1952], No. 11729/52. Class 103(1) In a disc brake, particularly for aircraft, the brake disc is of rectangular cross-section so as to have braking surfaces engageable by friction pads on all its four sides. As shown in Fig. 2, the disc comprises triangular section parts 1 of iron cast integrally on to. an annular steel reinforcing plate 2. The brake applying members comprise L section pressure plates 5a, 5b and 7a, 7b, carrying friction material 6, and 8, which are urged against the disc by a fluid pressure cylinder and piston 12, 13. As shown in the wheel structure of Fig. 3, the friction pad carrying members 24 and 25 fulcrum about a ball pivot 27 at one pair of ends and are closed together by a fluid pressure actuator 31 acting through a rod 29. A similar construction is also described in which the plate carrying the triangular section disc elements is secured at its outer periphery and extends in a diagonally opposite direction. Other forms of brake actuating mechanism are shown in Figs. 6 and 9. Fig. 7 shows an actuator intended for manual operation using a coarse thread screw 53. Actuators may be disposed at diametrically opposite points around the disc.
