Abstract

714,596. Igniting burners. POWER JETS (RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Aug. 29, 1952 [Sept. 13, 1951], No. 21551/51. Classes 75 (1) and 75 (3) For igniting fuel injected through a spray nozzle 3 into a flame tube 2 within a combustion chamber 1 of a gas turbine engine, a gas igniter torch 4 is inserted through apertures in the members 1, 2 normally closed by spring urged flaps 12, 14 which are pushed open by the end of the igniter 4. The latter is supplied from a container 6 of compressed gas through a flexible pipe 5 and is provided with a stop 10 which may be adjustable and which limits the insertion into the chamber 1. A flame guard 9 prevents extinction of the igniter during insertion and may be retractable to facilitate ignition of the main fuel. If instead of the spray nozzle 3 a vaporizer tube combustion system is employed, the igniter serves also to preheat the vaporizer tubes.
