Abstract

714,374. Pistons; cylinders; stuffing-box substitutes. TOMKINS-JOHNSON CO. May 19, 1952 [July 21, 1951], No. 12617/52. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) [Also in Group XXVIII] Cushioning of a compressed air actuated piston 14, Fig. I, near the ends of its stroke in a cylinder 10 is effected by an axially projecting plug 18 of the piston telescoping into an axial exhaust port 28 in the cylinder head 12 provided with an annular sealing ring 32. The sealing ring 32 comprises a synethetic rubber ring 35, Fig. II, held in a metal casing 34 by a ring 40 and a flange 42, and a comb-spring 38 reinforces a resilient lip 36. The cylinder heads 12 which are bolted to the cylinder 10 have inlet and exhaust ports 24, 26 leading to the axial ports 28.
