Abstract

982,470. Sealing pistons. L. STRACH. Sept. 18, 1963, No. 36829/63. Heading F2T. In an I.C. engine a piston 4 has integrally formed on its head a stiff annular flange 5 which is bevelled to provide a sharp edge, there being a constant clearance of 0.03 mm. or less between the piston and the cylinder when both are expanded during operation of the engine. The flange 5 is said to set up in the combustion gases 6 a counter-current 7 which produces a contraction 9 in the flow of gases thereby reducing leakage 8 past the piston.
