Abstract

636,286. Pistons. DYKES, P. DE K., and MOTOR INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 18, 1947, No. 33401. [Class 122(i)] A piston ring 1 in a groove 3 is dimensioned to allow pressure fluid to pass to the inner surface of the ring to expand it into contact with a cylinder wall 2. To prevent the ring closing the gap 15 during lateral movement of the ring, a limb 6 is arranged to contact a projection 16 in the ring groove before the gap 15 is closed, thereby allowing access of fluid pressure to a substantial area of the inner surface of the ring 1. The ring 1 may be U or W shaped or the upper faces of an L-shaped ring may be tapered, with corresponding surfaces in the groove.
