Abstract

623,478. Compressed air engines. SMALL-. PIECE, C. D. P. May 1, 1947, No. 11695. [Classes 122(i) and 122(iii)] In a double acting compressed air engine a cylinder 11 is closed by rectangular end plates 12 held together by the rods 13 passing through the corners thereof, air passages 26 communicate with openings 23 in the faces of end plates 12 adjacent the cylinder bore and one end plate carries a bearing 18 and seal 20 for the plunger rod 21 fitted with a plunger 15 having projections 22 thereon which at the end of each stroke enter openings 23 in the end plates and by engaging sealing means 24 therein provide a cushioning effect which can be varied by adjustable air bleed holes 28, 30. At least one alternative air passage is also provided in each of the end plates and consists of a duct 32, clear of projection 22, and a radial passage 33 leading outwardly to the periphery of the end plate, which, when an external plug is removed therefrom and a sealing plug inserted in passage 26, can serve as the outlet and inlet air passage for that end of the cylinder and thereby eliminate the said cushioning effect.
