Abstract

Cemenititous compositions are prepared by hydrating a mixture of one or more hydraulic cements and sand with an aqueous emulsion containing a first, water insoluble thermoplastic polymer derived from a monomer or monomers with an ethenoid linkage, a plasticizer for the first polymer, a non-ionic stabilizer for the emulsion, and a second thermoplastic linear polymer having a short chain with considerable branching that is modified with a drying oil and is incompatible with the first polymer in the aqueous emulsion. The first polymer can be any water insoluble vinyl polymer, e.g. polyvinyl acetate or chloride, or polyethylene or polystyrene. The second polymer can be drying oil modified alkyd resin, coumarone, polypropylene sebacate, or partially polymerized drying oil. Additions present include a calcium sulphate compound, asbestos, oil impregnated cork, driers for the oil modified polymer; and, as plasticizers, tri-cresyl phosphate or dimethyl glycol phthalate; and, as stabilizers, methyl ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, glue, water soluble polyvinyl alcohol, and glyceryl borate resin; and pigments.ALSO:Cementitious compositions are prepared by hydrating a mixture of one or more hydraulic cements and sand with an aqueous emulsion containing a first, water insoluble thermoplastic polymer derived from a monomer or monomers with an ethenoid linkage, a plasticizer for the first polymer, a non-ionic stabilizer for the emulsion, and a second thermoplastic linear polymer having a short chain with considerable branching that is modified with a drying oil and is incompatible with the first polymer in the aqueous emulsion. A plaster substance based on calcium sulphate may also be included to counter-act shrinkage. Other additions include asbestos, oil impregnated cork, pentachlor phenol (used as a fungicide) and driers for the oil modified polymer. The first polymer can be any water insoluble vinyl copolymer, e.g. polyvinyl acetate or chloride, or polyethylene or polystyrene. The second polymer can be drying oil modified alkyd resin, bitumen, coumarone, polypropylene sebacate, or partially polymerized drying oil. Plasticizers are tricresyl phosphate or dimethyl glycol phthalate, and stabilizers are methyl ethyl cellulose, glue, water soluble polyvinyl alcohol, glyceryl borate resin, and cellulose acetate. Pigments may also be added.
