Class 94 (1) In a method of wrapping articles of a soft or easily-deformable nature, particularly flat articles, e.g. folded garments; jellies or kippers, using a machine in which the articles are moved by conveyer fingers along a bed and each article engages a wrapper which is tucked and folded during the progress of the article along the bed and when it is stationary at the end of such movement, a thin stiffening card or plate is wrapped with each article and the tucking and folding operations are so effected that one side or end of the package is left open to enable the stiffener to be withdrawn before final closure of the package. A machine for making block-ended packages similar to that described in Specification 712,829 may be used, the tucking and folding members at one side of the inclined bed being omitted. The articles 5, Fig. 1, are placed on the stiffeners 2 and fed by a horizontal conveyer 13 to an inclined rollerway 29 which tilts each stiffener with the article supported thereon so that it rests on edge on the inclined bed 1. The stiffener is then engaged by a conveyer finger and moved up the bed with the article while the wrapper 14 is applied and folded as shown in Fig. 3. The stiffeners may be formed with a short extension 2a, Fig. 4, to support the bottom of the article, or may embrace three sides of the article, as shown in Fig. 5. A bent tongue 10, Fig. 6, or opening 12, Fig. 7, may be provided to facilitate withdrawal. The stiffeners may be made of cardboard, thin metal or plastic sheet and may be corrugated to reduce friction during the withdrawing operations.
