Abstract
922,204. Packaging machines. PROCTOR & GAMBLE Ltd. April 28, 1961 [April 28, 1960], No. 15520/61. Class 94(1). An apparatus for forming a lined package around an article comprises a frame, a reciprocating feed pusher for moving the article into a forming pocket for holding the partially formed package in a squared condition, means for feeding a superposed liner and wrapper into the path of said feed pusher and a stationary means arranged to fold the liner and wrapper around three sides of the article and to form an end tuck at each end of the article whilst it is moved past the said tucking means into the forming pocket. An article 26 in Fig. 1 and 4 is advanced laterally on a conveyer belt 25 against a stop 26a, a pre-cut and scored liner blank 31 superposed on a pre-cut outer wrapper 32 mounted in an overwrap blank support 27 and co-operating end flap folders 28 and end flap holders 29 disposed below the end flap folders 28. The article is then pushed by a reciprocating feed pusher 30 and co-acting reciprocating support 57 past a pair of stationary backers 61 forming first end tucks 63 until it enters a forming pocket 56 composed by a stationary stop 58, the said support 57 and the upper surface 59 of a previously formed package 76a disposed in a vertical shoot 75, whereupon the front panel 33 and the overlying portion of the outer wrapper blank are tucked downwardly by a rotary and reciprocating folder 65 provided at 67 to a neck 68 engaging a pinion 73, which actuates the folder's pivotal movement in the stationary cam tracks 71 to complete the fold. Subsequently a vertical plunger 79 having a pair of spaced pads 81, 82 is moved downwardly thereby moving the centre stack of partially wrapped package down the shoot, whereupon the tear tab panel 37 of the liner blank and the corresponding superposed wrapper portion are folded upwardly to overlap the front panel 33 and the package is passed past a heater 86 to form a heat seal over the overlapped portion and a cooling element 87 to chill the seal and cause it to take a permanent set. The downward movement in the shoot lowers the bottom package to a folding channel 90, where a reciprocating tucker 88 forms a second tuck 89 at both ends of the package which is then discharged into a chain conveyer 91 having spaced fingers 93 moving the package past a pair of stationary nesting tuckers 94, and upper and lower folding members 95, 96 respectively to form an upper end fold 97 and lower end fold 98. The package is completed on being moved between a pair of opposite heater elements 99 to form a heat seal and cooler elements similar to elements 87 may be employed beyond the heaters 99. The package is opened by pulling the opening tab 41, Fig. 18. All the moving elements of the apparatus may be operated from a common power supply, Fig. 19 (not shown), in timed relationship. The outer wrapper blanks 32 may be supplied from a web 53, Fig. 9, and are severed by a knife 54 and fed to the machine and the liner blanks 31 may be supplied in a pre-cut form a stack 55 contained in a magazine and fed by rollers into the wrapping machine so that they are in a superposed relationship to the outer wrapper blank 32 when they come to rest in the blank support 27.
