Abstract

445,884. Wrapping-machines; packages. JACKSON, T. G., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd., 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford, London. Oct. 19, 1934, No. 29965. [Class 94 (i)] Relates to a machine for the formation of packages in which a wrapper is applied in the manner shown in Fig. 7. According to the invention, means are provided to lift or hold the end portion of the top or longer flap clear of the article while the under or shorter flap is being folded on to the face of the article, and the top flap is then folded over the under fiap. The articles 1 to be wrapped pass down a stacker 2 to the machine bed 3 and are moved by a conveyer 4 against a wrapper blank, severed from a web 7 by knives 5, 6, and to which adhesive has been applied by a wheel 10. A guide 13 positions the wrapper, which, upon the further movement of the conveyer 4, is folded into a U-shape by the bed 3 and a brush 14. The narrow end tucks 17 are made by fixed folders. Prongs 19 on the conveyers 4 engage the lower face of the article and prevent the short end of the wrapper from being folded against this face, and an oscillating adhesive applying roller 21 folds back the short end against a support 20, Fig. 4, while applying adhesive. A folder 24 turns down the long end 16 against the rear end face of the article, and a folder 26 turns the edge against the lower face. A pusher 30, Fig. 1, now moves the article to the right and the gumming roller 21 releases the short end 15, which is thereupon folded up to overlie the end 16. The folder 26 remains in its advanced position whilst the article is being fed away so as to support the end 16 until it has been engaged by the end 15. The narrow end tucks 37 are formed by swing- ing folders before stationary folders 38, 39 complete the package by forming and applying the side flaps 40, 41. The folds may be dried by heating elements 42 and the package is passed up a stacker 43. The blanks to form the wrapper, may be of such a shape that projections, are arranged to extend beyond the edge of a face to the article to facilitate removal of the wrappers. Tear starting slits may be provided in the exposed edge, or reinforcing tearing strips may be secured to the wrapper web before severing. In another form, the strip may be constituted by a box pleat formed in the web. Specification 124,197, [Class 94 (i)], is referred to.
