240,926. Molins, W. E. July 10, 1924. Packeting by wrapping-up.-Relates to a method of and means for wrapping cigarettes or other articles in two or more wrappers. According to the invention, batches of articles are moved simultaneouslv in a constant direction and rapid succession into engagement with wrapping strips fed transversely across the parts in separate planes. The cigarettes may be fed by an endless conveyer having pusher-pieces as described in Specification 13957/15 and the wrapping strips may be fed across the path of the batches by apparatus such as is described in Specification 165,891. Any or all of the wrappers may be gummed and secured by apparatus such as is described in Specification . 244,141, [Class 95, Paints &c.]. In the form of apparatus shown, pusher-pieces 3, Fig. 6, of a. chain conveyer run through a slot in the table of the machine and convey a batch 12 into engagement with a vertically-disposed sheet R of tin foil, foil and tissue, or other lining material. The foil is fed from a reel 15 and is pulled down by rollers 16, 17, a knife 18 severing a strip from the web when the sheet has just been gripped between the cigarettes and the folding box T. Scrapers 46, 47 prevent any tendency to stick to the rollers. The folding box comprises a top plate 48 and side folders 51 - - 53 which cause the formation of the partially-wrapped bunch shown in Fig. 12. This bunch is carried to the left by the conveyer into engagement with a second wrapper. The wrappers are removed from a table 55, Fig. 5. by suction tubes 60, which move the lowermost blank on to rollers 65. A roller 66 is moved down on to the top of the blank, which is thereby fed into the grip of rollers 67, 68, the upper of which is idle and is spring pressed on to the lower. A guide 69 and directing roller 70 cause the blank to pass vertically downwards through a slot 71 in the machine bed, and into position to be engaged by the oncoming partially-wrapped batch. A lever 77 and spring 78<a> press upon the lever 73 and hold the roller 70 in position. The folding box into which the wrapper is carried by the batch comprises a cover 101 and long side folders 102 for making the end tucks d, Fig. 13. Folders 103 turn up the side folds e and gum wheels 105 project through slots 104 in the folder to apply adhesive to the flap. Folders 125 turn down the flap g upon the adhesive. The moving packet then arrives between tucking wheels of the type described in Specification 214,792 by which the end tucks of the open end are formed, the packet being meanwhile held stationary by a flap 147. Members 141, 145 fold down the broad end flaps and the packet is carried past heated guides to dry the adhesive, and into engagement with a third wrapper, which may be transparent. The third wrapper is applied in the same manner as the first, and the packet, having a closed inner wrapper, a paper cup open at one end, and an outer wrapper enclosing the whole, but open at one end, is discharged. The final closure may be made in any manner. The conveyer may be actuated intermittently.
