Packeting by wrapping-up.-In a machine for wrapping cigars, the cigars 54, Fig. 1, are placed on a feed table 55, and are advanced by pins 60- on conveyer chains 57 into contact with a finger- 71 which controls each forward step of the conveyer. A lifting member 74 pivoted at 31, raises ,the foremost cigar through a curved guide 75 and delivers it, with a wrapper, into a pocket in a rotary turret mounted on a shaft 26. The wrapping material 81 is fed from a reel 89, controlled by a strap 92 and weight 91, passes between feed rollers 82, 83, and is severed into wrappers by a knife 88. The receiving pockets comprise stationary sides 85, movable spring pressed sides 86, and yielding bases 87. A folder 121 turns up the depending edge of the wrapper, and, during the first intermittent movement of the turret, the upper edge 120 is turned down by a stationary folder 126, so that the wrapper is disposed about the cigar as a substantially cylindrical tube with projecting ends. On arrival at the folding station at the top of the turret, the projecting ends are subjected to the actions of dies 127, 128, Figs. 1, 4, and 5, causing channel folds 129, Fig. 10, to be formed. The dies, which are'mounted on arms 130, 131, swing into the open position shown in Fig. 1, and split cups 50, Fig. 11, close axially upon the end folds. The cups are so shaped that, during the engaging movement, one upstanding fold 129 at each end of the cigar is folded down and the other enters an axial slot 140. While the cigar is still held stationary, the cups are turned through one revolution to turn down the flaps in the slots 140. Tuckers 141, Fig. 13, are now pressed down through transverse slots 142 in the cups and form folds in the end flaps of the wrapper. Hangers 51 move inwards axially as shown in Fig. 15, and turn up the extreme ends of the wrapper, and the cups 50 are given another revolution, faces 143 thereon smoothing out the folds and completing the wrapping to form a package as shown in Fig. 16. The turret now advances to a discharging station, at which the movable side 86 is opened and releases the yielding base 87 so that it pushes the wrapped cigar 164 into a carrier 165, which turns downwards and deposits the cigar on a delivery table 172, along which they are advanced by a. finger 178.
