214,792. Molins, W. E. March 12, 1923. Packeting by wrapping-up. - Relates to machines for wrapping bunches of cigarettes or confectionery &c. in block form, in foil, paper, &c. According to the invention, a partially-folded packet is gripped by high-speed rollers as it issues from a folding-box, and is fed forwards in advance of its plunger or conveyer piece, thus gaining time for tucking-mechanism associated with the rollers to operate on the open end of the packet. As shown, a bunch of cigarettes is pushed by the members .of a conveyer into contact with foil at C and wrapped in a folding box 1. Rollers 2, rotating at a greater peripheral speed than that of the conveyer, engage the sides of the packet and move it away from the conveyer member. Each roller is shaped like a shallow dish and carries a pawl 3 held normally in the position shown in Fig. 2 by springs 5. Bands 6 of rubber &c. are disposed around part of the circumference to afford a gripping surface. As the rollers rotate, the ends of the pawls 3 form and tuck in the narrow side flaps at the open end of the packet D. On continued rotation of the rollers the pawls engage the ends of guides 8 and are pushed into an inoperative position in recesses 7. The packet is then momentarily stationary within the guides 8 and a cam-operated tucker 9, Fig. 1, descends to turn down the upper broad-end flap. A spindle 18 on the conveyer then raises an arm, pivoted at 17, the end of which turns up the lower broad flap. The packet is steadied for these operations by spring-held stop 19 which rises when the conveyer member overtakes the packet and feeds it to the left, for example, through a mouthpiece 22 and into a shell 23. If the cigarettes are to be packed in a two-piece slide and shell box, the tuckers 9, 16 are omitted and the broad-end flaps folded as described in Specification 169,341, the top broad flap being folded down by a camoperated pusher co-operating with rollers corresponding to the rollers 19 of that Specification. The tuckers 9, 16 may carry rollers, and may be adapted to gum the flaps as they are turned in. One tucker may be omitted and the final fold made by pushing the packet into a stacker.
