1339721 Cigarette packing, or wrapping, machine MOLINS Ltd 8 Jan 1971 [9 Jan 1970] 1193/70 Heading B8C In a cigarette packing machine bundles of three rows of cigarettes, formed in an apparatus 1 and wrapped in a metal foil in a second apparatus 2, are accepted in a first drum 3 which transfers them to a packing drum 4 which receives partially formed packet blanks, Fig. 2, from a drum 5, each blank, fed from a reservoir 8, passing along a short conveyer 9 and successively past a detector 10, which detects whether a blank is missing or two blanks are located one upon the other, a gummer 11, which gums blank panels 14, 15, 18, and folders, not shown, which fold over the panel B 1 and stick it to the panel B14. A blank is transferred to a drum 5 at point A while the drum is stationary and then the drum 5 is rotated 60 degrees anticlockwise which brings the blank, previously located in the drum, to a position B for transfer into a pocket in the drum 4 and be partially shaped therein as panels B3, B6, B9, B12 are bent through 90 degrees against folders, not shown, the drum 5 being indexed anticlockwise three times while moving from position A to position B. Movement of the drum 5 from A to B could also be arranged to fold the panels B4, B5, B10, B11 through 90 degrees but, in this particular embodiment, these panels are folded as they are transferred into a pocket in the drum as are the panels B15, B18 which are folded up and stuck to the respective panels B3, B12 and B6, B9. As the drum 4 is then indexed anticlockwise 90 degrees in two steps to move a packet from position B to position C the panels B14, B19 are folded back out of the way by guides, not shown, so that a bundle of cigarettes can be pushed into the corresponding partially formed open packet. The drum 4 continues to be rotated anticlockwise, in 45 degree steps from position C to position D during which panels B and B19 are folded down and panels B2, B7, B8, B13 are gummed, any defective packages being ejected by a plunger, not shown, at point 12. The packets are then each ejected by a plunger, not shown, located in the respective pocket into a corresponding pocket in the drum 6 which as it rotates could fold down the panels B2, B7, B8, B13. At position E finished packets are transferred to an ejector drum 7 which ejects defective packets, and transfers properly packed packets to a conveyer 20, gaps in the stream of packets being filled by an apparatus 21.
