There are numerous forms of apparatus for packeting cigarettes or other goods. Moreover, wrapping devices have been used for providing the goods as they are inserted into the containers such as boxes or cartons with one. or more wrappers (for example parch inentpaper tinfoil or the like).

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show one embodiment oil the new apparatus. Referringto the drawings, the'group of cigarettes Ur arranged in two superposed layersis fed between the guide bars 1 and'l by the plunger 2 into the pocket 3 ofa turntablesl providedwith six'such' pockets, taking with it the wrapper strip E (forexai'nple ofparchment-paper) disposed in front of it. The wrapper strip E is drawn from the spool 5 in known manner between a pair of knives 6 and a pair ofgripping jaws 7 and laid in front ofthe pocketti. The jaws 7 serve to hold the severed wrapper strip after it has been cut off by the pair of knives Guntil it is entrained by the group of cigarettes passing into the pocket.

The turntable his connected firmly to a sleeve member 4' which is rotatable on the upright'spindle 8, and "the lower portion of which is formed with ratchetteeth 9. In the ratchet teeth' engages a resilient pawl 10 carried by a support 11. The support 11 is formed with a boss 11 embracing the upright spindle 8 and is moved to and fro by means of a connecting rod 12 through the medium of a crank and connecting rod gearing 13, the sleeve 4 and the turntable 4: connected there with being thereby rotated each time through 60 i. e. by the distance between two pockets.

On the cigarettes being introduced into the pocketffi the downwardly projecting end of thewrapper strip E remains for the mornentin the vertical position. Onfurther rotation of the turntable 41 the end is raised into the'horizontal position by the cam face 14.

At an'angle of 60 to the feed track 1, 1 is disposed a flap folder 15 which initially as siunes the position shown'in'Fi'g. hi i. e. is horizontal. This flap folder is secured to a pinion 16 which rotates about the pivot 17 of the pusher or slide 17. On a lateral bracket 18 on theslide 17 is mounted a pin ion 19 which meshes with the pinion 16 and alsowith a stationary rack 20; To the lower end of the slide is connected a spring 21 tending to draw the slide downwardly. On the slide is also mounted a roller 22 which tracks the cam surface 23 provided on the support 11. The cam surface 23 falls away in the direction of the arrow :22 in Fig. 1 so that on rotation of the turntable in the direction 3 in Fig. 1 the roller 22 and therefore also the slide 17 are moved downwards while on the return movement of the pawl carrier or support the roller 22 and the slide 17 are raised by the cam surface 23, the flap folder 15 and the end of the wrapper strip thereon being moved into the vertical position shown in Fig. 4. On the support 11 returning to the initial position shown in Fig. 1 the roller 22 and the slide 17 connected therewith are raised as indicated in Fig. 4b. The flap folder 15 is thus swung further into the horizontal position through the opening 24 in the stationary cover plate 24 and lays the end of the wrapper over the group of cigarettes.

On further rotation of the turntable 4 through 60 the group of cigarettes wrapped in the wrapper are turned into the position indicated at z in Fig. 1, the corresponding lower edge being so interrupted on the recess 24' as to avoid injury to the ends of the wrapper. During the oscillating movement of the support in the direction of the arrow 3 (shown in Fig. 1) the slide 17 is forced downwards until the folding flap comes into the position shown in Fig. 4a so that the projecting end of the wrapper for the next group of cigarettes rests thereon.

The wrapped group of cigarettes passes from the position a into the path of a plunger 25 carried by a lever 26. The lever 26 rocks about the pivot 27 and is provided at its rear end with a roller 28 which tracks a cam 29 on the shaft 30. In the path of the plunger 25 on the cover plate 24 (Fig. 3) is provided a further opening 24 and in the stationary base plate 31 an opening 31. In order to prevent the group of cigarettes G provided with the wrapper strip from falling through the opening 31 there are provided on the four sides resilient flaps 32 which are pivotally mounted and have springs (not shown) urging them into horizontal position. On the group of cigarettes being pushed downwards by means of the plunger 25 said flaps 32 are turned downwards against the action of their springs. Beneath the base plate 31 is provided a table 33 which adjacent the fiaps has an opening 33. Over the table 33 the tinfoil strip St drawn from the spool 34 is fed by known feeding means and is severed by means of the cutters 35 after it has passed between the lateral guide bars The opened boxes or cartons Sch are fed from a feed track 37 radially disposed with respect to the turntable by means of a plunger 38 with the box opening beneath the opening 33 in the table 33, the upper side of the plunger 39 forming an extension of the feed track 37. After the box Sch has reached the plunger 39 the plunger 25 is depressed by the cam disc 29, the group of cigarettes being pushed from the pocket 3 in the turntable 4 and the flaps 32 at the same time being turned downwards. The forward ends of the flaps 32 after they have pressed downwards the tinfoil strip disposed in front of them lie between the group of cigarettes and the box frame or between group of cigarettes and the tinfoil strip inserted in the box frame, ensuring proper introduction in the group of cigarettes into the box and preventing collision between the cigarette ends and the neck portions of the box.

As soon as the group of cigarettes with the wrapper and the tinfoil strip disposed at right angles to the latter is inserted in the box the plunger 39 operated by the lever .40 and the camdisc 41 moves back into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 so that the lower edge of the box lies flush with the surface of the feed track 42. Now the folding finger 44 provided on the operated by the cam 45 moves to the right in the direction of Fig. 3 and bends over the projecting end of the tinfoil strip St upward- 1y over the neck of the box. Now an entraining member on a chain or the like not shown grips the box and feeds it in the direction of the arrow 0 in Fig. 1 out of the path of the opening 33. The other end of the tinfoil strip still projecting over the end of the box being laid on the rounded upper edge of the channel 46 onto the group of cigarettes.

As shown in Fig. 1 the box after it is fed a certain distance in the direction of the arrow 0 is fed by means not shown in the drawings in the direction of the arrow (Z to the closing device and to the device for wrapping a band around the box.

It should be noted that the rollers 47 and 48 in the present embodiment constitute the feeding means for the tinfoil strip St. Moreover the plunger 43 is connected with the cam 45 by the rock lever 49 which with its roller 50 tracks the cam 45.

I claim:

1. Apparatus for inserting cigarettes or other goods in containers and for wrapping the cigarettes comprising a turntable adapted for intermittent rotation, said turntable formed with peripheral pockets, a cover plate and a bottom plate for said turntable, a Wrapper feeding device adapted to place a wrapper in front of a pocket, a plunger adapted to push the goods into said pocket and to entrain the wrapper, means for folding inwards the end of the wrapper, means for presenting a second wrapper transversely of the first wrapper opposite the filled pocket and means for ejecting the goods from said pocket and into a container and effecting e11- trainmentof the second wrapper.

Apparatus for inserting cigarettes or other goods in containers and for wrapping the cigarettes comprising a turntable adapted for intermittent rotation, said turntable formed with peripheral pockets, a cover plate and a bottom plate for said turntable, said plates each provided with openings, a wrapper feeding device adapted to place a wrapper in front of a pocket, a plunger adapted to push the goods into said pocket and to entrain the Wrapper, means for folding inwards the end of the wrapper, a guide track for presenting a second wrapper transversely of the first wrapper opposite the filled pocket, a guide track disposed radially of said turntable and adapted to feed open containers towards said pocket and means for pushing the goods from said pocket through the opening in the bottom plate and into an open container and effecting entrainment of the second Wrapper.

6. Apparatus for inserting cigarettes or other goods in containers and for wrapping the cigarettes comprising a turntable adapted for intermittent rotation, said turntable formed with peripheral pockets, a cover plate and a bottom plate for said turntable, said plates each provided with openings, the opening in the bottom plate being closed by spring pressed flaps, a wrapper feeding device adapted to place a wrapper in front of a pocket, a plunger adapted to push the goods into said pocket and to entrain the wrapper, means for folding inwards the end of the wrapper, means for presenting a second wrapper transversely of the first wrapper opposite the filled pocket, means for feeding open containers towards said turntable and means for forcing the goods from said pocket and at the same time moving the folding flaps in the bottom plate into open position and pushing the goods with the second wrapper into the open container.

7. Apparatus for wrapping goods and inserting the latter into containers comprising a turntable formed with pockets, wrapper feeding means for placing a wrapper in front of a pocket, means to insert said goods and said wrapper into said pocket to partially fold said wrapper about said goods, means for completing the folding of said Wrapper about said goods, means for applying a second w rapper transversely to said tirst named wrapper and means for entraining said second wrapper and placing said goods into containers.

8. Apparatus for wrapping and inserting goods in containers comprising means for first partly wrapping said goods by encircling a wrapper around the latter in one direetion and means for causing folding of a second wrapper around said goods in a direc tion transverse to said first named wrapper and means for simultaneously depositing said goods in a container.
