MULLER 8c 00., PF DBESDEN, GERMANY APPARATUS FOR PACKETING GOODS Application fiIed November 29, 1930, Serial No. 499,014, and in. Germany April 8, 1930.
The present invention is a continuation in part of my copending application Ser. No. 409,292, filed Nov. 23, 1929.
Apparatus for packeting cigarettes or other goods are well known in many forms. In such apparatus it has been proposed to pro vide means, which on the insertion of the goods in the packet or box permit of enclosing them in one or more wrappings for OX- irrlnple of parchment paper, tin foil or the In the apparatus of the present invention the goods, for example cigarettes, are inserted in an open packet, the goods being wrapped at the same time in two different wrappers.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a turntable rotated intermittently between a fixed cover plate and a bottom plate and provided on its periphery with pockets to receive the goods. In addition there is provided a feeding device for a wrapper strip (for example of parchment paper) so arranged that the strip is placed in front of a pocket into which the goods are pushed taking the strip with them. Then on further movement of the turntable and on folding inwards the projecting ends of the strip, if any, at another position of the pocket of the turntable containing the goods a second wrapper strip is positioned transversely of the first strip, the goods wrapped in the first strip being pushed by a plunger entraining the second transverse strip into the packet or box placed in front of it.
The goods wrapped only in one strip are ejected from the pocket containing them by an entraining member movable radially in an opening in the stationary cover plate and deposited on the second wrapper strip which i positioned in front of a shaping channel located externally of the turntable. The shaping channel is arranged thus externally of the turntable and the goods are fed by means of an entraining member from the pocket on the turntable in front of the shaping channel.
It is thus possible by simple means to wrap the goods as it were crosswise in the two strips. The means for folding the projecting strip ends may be directly connected with the turntable and operated by means which effect intermittent rotation of the turntable.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which show by way of example one embodiment of the improved apparatus.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my apparatus Fig. 2 1s a full sectional view along line 22 of Fig. 1 seen in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of a portion of Fig. 1 seen in the direction of the arrow 1 thereof;
Figs. 4 and 5 respectively show the same detail of Fig. 3 in two different operating positions;
Fig. 6 is a partial sectional detail along line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is a side View of Fig. 6 seen in the direction of the arrow W;
Fig. 8 is a section viewed in the direction of the arrows along line 88 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 9 is a section viewed in the direction of the arrows along line 99 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the machine is mounted in the frame A. B is a belt pulley for the main drive, C the drivingshaft on which the pinion D and the worm wheel F are mounted. The latter moves the plunger 2 backwards and forwards through the medium of the crank H and double-armed lever I.
The group of cigarettes G arranged in two superposed layers is fed between guide bars 1 and 1 by the plunger 2 into the pocket 3 on the turntable l, which is provided with six such pockets, taking with it the wrapper strip E (for example of parchment paper) placed in front of it. The wrapper strip E is drawn from a spool 5 in known manner between the pair of knives 6 and a pair of gripping jaws 7 and led in front of the opening in the pocket 3, the gripping jaws 7 serving to hold the wrapper strip after it has been severed by the pair of knives 6 until it is engaged by the group of cigarettes entering the pocket.
The turntable 4c is rigidly connected to an intermediate member 4 rotatably mounted on the vertical spindle 8, the lower part of which member 4 is formed with ratchet teeth 9. In the ratchet teeth 9 engages a resilient pawl 10 arranged on the carrier 11. The carrier 11 has a lug 11 embracing the upright spindle 3 and is swung to and fro by means of a connecting rod 1 pivoted thereto through the medium of a crank 13. as a result of which the intermediate member 4 and the turntable connected therewith is turned each time through 60, i. e. an amount corresponding to the distance apart 01" the pockets.
On inserting a group of cigarettes in the pocket 3 the downwardly projecting end of the wrapper strip E remains for the moment in the vertical position. On rotation of the turntable 4 this strip end is "l l the cam 14 into the horizontal positlon.
At an angle of 60 to the direction of the guide track 1 and 1 is arranged a flap folder which in its initial position is in the position shown in Fig. 4, i. e. is horizontal. This flap folder is secured to a pinion 16 mounted on the pivot 17 of the slide 17. On a lateral projection 18 on the slide 17 is mounted a pinion 19 which meshes with the pinion 16 and also with a stationary rack bar 20. A. spring 21 connected to the lower end oi the slide tends to draw the slide downwards. On the slide is also mounted guide roller 22 which co-operates with a cam provided on the pawl carrier 11. The cam inclines in the direction of the arrow in shown in 1, so that on rotation of the turntable i the direction of the arrow y indicated in .1. 1 the roller 22 and therewith the slide 17 are moved downwards, while on the return movement of the pawl carrier the roller and therewith the slide 17 are moved upwards by the cam 23, the flap folder and the end of the wrapper strip E resting thereon being moved into the vertical position shown in Fig. 3. On the pawl carrier reaching the initial position shown in Fig. 1 the roller 22 and the slide 17 connected therewith have been pushed upwards to the extent shown in Fig. 5. The flap folder is thus moved further into the horizontal position through the recess 24 in the stationary cover plate 24 and places the end of the wrapper strip on the group of cigarettes.
On the further rotation of the turntable through 60 the group of cigarettes embracec by the wrapper strip is turned into the position indicated at Z in Fig. 1, the corresponding lower edge on the recess 24 being so shaped as to prevent the end of the wrapper strip striking against it. During the swinging movement of the pawl carrier in the direction of the arrow 'y indicated in 1 the slide 17 has been moved downwards so that the flap folder 15 has moved into the position shown in Fig. 4 and the pr ecting end of the wrapper strip 01" the next group of cigarettes rests thereon.
the group 01" cigarettes provided with the wrapper strip now passes into the position shown at X in Fig. 1. At this point, as shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 7, there is arranged a slide 25 movable radially of the turntable. On the slide 25 is provided a pin 26 which is engaged by the forked end 27 of the lever 27. The lever 27 is mounted at 23 on a bracket arm 29 and is operated by the link 30 connccted thereto at 3l. The other end of the link 30 is mounted on the crank pin 32 on the disc On the slide 25 is also mounted a pusher member 34 which turns about the pivot 34 which is held by a spring 35 in the to 1 line position shown in Figs. 6 and 7. If new the lever 27 is moved by the crank mechanism into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 the slide is pushed in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 6. The group of cigarettes O is thus engaged by the lower end of the pusher member 34 projecting into the pocket 3 on the turntable and is pushed from the pocket 3. The wrapper strip E lying in front of the rear ends of the cigarettes will ensure that the complete group is pushed as a whole to the stop 36 even although the pushed member is cut away as shown in Fig. 7. lhe upper guide bar 37' is so formed that on ejection of thegroup of cigarettes the ends of the wrapper strip do not fall. For this purpose the to ward edge 37 of the guide bar is extended close to the die 38.
Befo "e the group of cigarettes is pushed in the manner above described over the shaping channel 39 a second wrapper strip E is placed by known means on the hinged flaps 40 which facilitate the introduction of the group of cigarettes into the packets S. The open boxes are fed on the guide track 41 in the direction oi the arrow U shown in Fig. 1 to the shaping channel 39. The die 38 is mounted with its spindle 38 in wing 29 in the bracket arm 29 and is vertically movable. On a pin provided on the spindle 38 engages he forked end 43 of the bell-crank lever 43 movable about the pivot 44. By means of a spring 45 connected to the rear end of the.
bell-crank lever 43, the bell-crank lever 43 with its guide roller 46 is drawn against the cam disc As soon as the group of cigarettes passes between the wrapper strip E and the die 38, the die 33 is moved downwards, the introduction of the cigarettes into the boxes being onsured by the flaps 40. On further downward movementof the die 38, the die 47 acting as abutment recedes correspondingly so that the iiaps 40 are withdrawn from the box. i l hen the die 47 reaches the position shown in Fig. 2 and after the die 38 has again been raised, he Work is taken away by known means in t is direction of the arrow V indicated in 1 into a channel. On its way to the :hannei the still projecting ends of the wrapper strip is folded over in known manner.
After the group of cigarettes is inserted in the manner described by means of the die 38, the pusher member 84; is moved by means of the lever into the position shown in dash and dot lines in Fig. 6. On retraction of the slide the edges d9 of the cut away portion in the pusher plate 3e come in contact with the guide bars 3'? so that on further retraction of the slide into initial position the pusher plate at is moved out of the path of the turntable l. The turntable a can be further rotated after the pusher member is moved out of its ath. l Vhen the slide is returned to its initial position the pusher plate under the action of the spring is again moved into the position shown in F 6. F or this purpose corresponding cut away portions 37 will be pro ided on the guide bar 87.
The lever 48 which ensures operation of the. plate S lin the forward position is rotatable about the pivot 50 and bears with its rear end 48 which is provided with a roller on the cam disc A spring 51 secured to the frame at presses the lever against the cam track.
The die with its spindle a? is mounted in a ing and is moved up and down from the shaft K by means of a crank disc 58, a connecting rod 541- end a lever 57 pivoted at in a bearing bracket 56.
The shaft K is driven by the pinions D, D from the driving shaft C and itself drives the shaft 60 and the disc 33 mounted thereon through the worm wheel 59.
