1440929 Packaging cigarettes A SCHMERMUND 4 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 59033/72 Addition to 1440923 Heading B8C In a cigarette block packaging machine wherein a revolver 213 having a plurality of cells 324/325 (one only being shown) is rotatable stepwise so that each cell is successively indexed through four stations, including a first station at which a wrapping sheet is received in a respective cell and assumes a U-shape with trailing and leading edge portions projecting radially outwardly from the cell and a second station at which folding means fold said portions over a block of cigarettes received in the cell, the folding means comprises a folder member 451a, which is pivotally-mounted on a carriage 453 reciprocable along guide rods 454, the folder member and carriage being driven such that the folder member is initially pivoted on the carriage in direction radially towards the cell, Fig. 3 (not shown), and then the carriage is displaced from a retracted position to move the folder member across the radially outer face of the cigarette block Fig. 4 (not shown) thereby folding down the trailing one of said edge portions. The folding is commenced after only partial insertion of the block into the cell and completed before insertion is completed. The drive of the carriage and folder member is affected by a shaft 465, which is rotated to rock a rocker shaft 466 and an outer co-axial tubular shaft 467 through cams 482 and 483 and cooperating shaft levers 469 and 468, the shaft 467 being connected by a linkage to the folder member to effect pivoting thereof and the shaft 466 being similarly coupled to the carriage to effect reciprocation thereof. The leading edge portion of the wrapper is subsequently folded over by a stationary folder 62 on indexing of the revolver anticlockwise to a third station. The machine may be of the type described in Specification 1,440,923 in which cigarettes are wrapped on a first revolver in a first wrapper prior to transfer to a second revolver on which a second wrapper is applied, and folding means as described above may be associated with each revolver.
