To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE G. McGmR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Wrapping and Labeling Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for wrapping and labeling articles.
One object of my invention is to simplify the construction and operation of wrapping and labeling machines, to increase the output, and to deliver the wrapped articles in a stacked form for convenience of removal and packing.
Another object is to deliver, one by one, printed labels from a stack of such labels in such position that the'same will be folded about the articles to be wrapped.
Another object is to apply gum or other adhesive to the label or outside wrapper and to fasten the same about an inner wrapper of the package in such wise as to ,causcfhe same to retain its folded or wrapped shape or form.
Another object is to make the folding mechanism readily accessible in case of accident, or derangement for any cause, to any of its parts; other objects will hereinafter appear.
My invention consists of features of construction arrangements and combinations of devices hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is embodied in the machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:

The reference, 2, marks fixed vertical sides of the machine; these sides are united by tie rods, 3, and platforms or tables, 4, 5, hereinafter referred to. The articles to be wrapped are placed in the Vertical guideway, 6, which has an open side, as shown in Fig. 2, to facilitate the insertion of the articles. This guideway, 6, rises from the table, 4, and is cut away on.its two sides to permit the pusher a to push the lower-most article therefrom and under the plunger I). The pusher or plunger 0 moves to and fro in the fixed guides a attached-to the table, 4, by screws or otherwise, and is provided with an underneath extension or lug a" which passes through a slot in the said table, 4; to this underneath lug or extension (1" is pivoted at, a, a link, a, whose other end is 'pivotally connected with the lever, a. The lever, a is pivoted at, a, to a collar, afixed upon a tie rod, 3, and said lever, (1- is provided at, a", with a stud and roller which engages with the groove of a drum cam,.a which is fast upon the driving shaft D upon the machine. The cam, a is shaped, proportioned and timed to move the pusher a as hereinafter described.
Thepaper, or foil, or both, from which the wrappers are formed, is fed from rolls arm or lever,
by the mechanism shown, claimed in a companion application for Letters Patent filed Feb. 2, 1909, Serial No. 475,689; the rolls are not shown herein, but certain of the feed rolls are indicated at, q, with their gears, 7, 8, and ratchet, 9.
The wrappers are severed from the web or webs by the oscillatory lmife, 10, which is pivoted at, 11, to the fixed frame-work of the machine and is provided with an arm, 12, and-a stud and roller, 13, for engagement with the grooved cam, 14, mounted on the fixed shaft of the roller, q, and driven by sprocket chain, 15. The knife, 10, coacts with the fixed edge or blade, 16,to sever the'wrappers from the web or webs (see Fig. 8). The wrappers so severed from the webs are immediately underneath the head I) of the vertically moving plunger above the mouth 0 of the first fold-ing mechanism. The head 6 is carried by the rod 1) which is guided in a vertical direction by the guides, N, which are attached to the frame work of the machine. The rod 1) is connected by a, pin and stud, b with a slotted arm or lever, b, integral with or attached to a sleeve, b, which is journaled upon atie rod, 3, of the machine, the tie rod in this instance having collars attached thereto between which the said sleeve works. The said sleeve, b", is provided with an arm, I), to which the upper end of a pit-man, b, is attached. Preferably, the pitman, 6 is adjustable as to length. The lower end of said pitma'n is pivotally connected with an 12 which is fulcrumed at, I)", on a tie rod, 3, inthe base of the machine, said pivot, 6 working between collars attached to the said tie rod by set screws or otherwise. Any suitable adhesive is placed in the receptacle or fountain g, which is attached to or is carried from the table, 5, by means of a bracketg' or otherwise. Above the fountain g is a rotatory shaft, 9 having fixed thereon a gear, 9 which meshes with the gear, f, on the fixed frame-work of the machine. The gear, 9 is driven, in the instance shown, from the shaft D by a sprocket gearing, 9 Partly inside the fountain g is a disk, which is fast upon' the shaft, g aforesaid, and scrapers, 9 are attached to the fountain at that side thereof where the said disk, g, rises out of the mass of adhesive, the function of the said scrapers being to prevent the disk from carrying around with it more than a thin film of the said adhesive substance. Outside the fountain, the said shaft, 9 has fixed thereto a beveled gear, 9 which meshes with a similar gear, 9, journaled on the bracket, g Immediately above the beveled gear, g, is a disk, g", which is attached to said gear and the periphery of which disk rubs or bears lightly against the face of the disk, 9, afoiesaid to take adhesive therefrom. The afore said long upstanding side of the label, 1, bears against the periphery of the disk, 5 as the articles pass. along the passageway e aforesaid and takes adhesive from said disk, and when the said long side of the label is laid down upon the article as indicated in Fig. 21, the label is .gummed to itself to form an external wrapper which holds down the wrapper w aforesaid. It is noted that by having the disk, 9, run at a rate of speed different from that of the disk, (Z where the two touch each other, and by having the disk, g also run at arate of speed different from that. of disk, g the transfer of gum from one to another disk is facilitated, as there ensues a wiping action of one disk on the other.
The wrapped articles deliyeredsfroin the passageway e are delivered one by one at intervals to a stacking apparatus now to be described. Attached to. an extensionof the table, 5, is a vertical guideway f of an inside length horizontally, slightly greater thanthe length of the Wra ped article and of a width horizontally sufllcient to allow the .articles to move upwardly therein without undue friction. The said guide or stack f-is provided with a passageway through its ase for a reciprocatory carrier or stackerlever f of the stacker. The ram, f", is moved to and fro by means of the bell lever, f which'is fulcruined at, f", and engages by the slot and pin, f, with said rain.

which is pivotally. connected at, f, with the pusher (Z aforesaid, the arrangement being such that as the said pusher (Z makes its return or-deadstroke the ram is advanced to carry the wrappedarticle under the stack The front wall of the stack f'is curved outwardly at, f, for the purpose of guiding the articles into the stack with greater certainty.
The operation of the stacker is asz follows: The stacker-lever f, in the position thereof shown in Fig. 6, is suppesedto be moving to the left and to have a wrapped article in the recess, f, thereof, and as the ram, f is advanced from the position thereof shown in Fi 3, to. the right the carrier f carries t e wrapped article in the said recess, P above the shelves, f", aforesaid; before the ram completes its forward or workin stroke, however, the pawl, f strikes a xed corner, f, on the machine and is disengaged from the pin, f aforesaid, whereupon the spring, f, raises the end, f, and depresses the end or table, f, more than enou h to disengage the wrapped package from t e recess. or depression, f, thereby depositin the'said package on the said shelves, f Tt should be remarked that if there are any packages in the stack f,
such packages are lifted and held above the top, or at east flush with the top of the wrapped package in the depression, f, as the said ram advances, whence it results that the wrapped packages are laced in the stack from underneath. Ont e return stroke of. the ram and very near the end thereof, the cam, f, strikes the stud or roller, f and the stacker lever is raised to the position thereof shown in Fig. 6, and
the pawl, f engages with the pin, f, to re tain the stacker lever in the position shown in Fig. 6. The articles are fed from the channel e out over the stacker lever f andunder the rolls, f, as .the ram is onits return or dead stroke, and are received by the flat surface, f of said lever f. The articles are prevented from moving with the lever f at such times, however, by the fixed sto f. The rollers, f, are journaled on stu s on a lever, f, fulcrumed at, f, and having a weight, f adjustable therealong. The articles drop into the recess, f, one for each stroke of the ram as" the lever, f reaches the end of its return or dead stroke. Y
The devices shown for feeding the labels, one by one, underneaththe plunger head 2) will now be described, reference being had more particularly to Figs. 2, a, 5 and 7. The labels with their printed faces down are placed in the ,guideway formed by the fingers h h and rest upon the belts, 12, of rubber or other suitable material; the belts, 72. run upon the pulleys, h", h*- .The pulleys, h, are fast upon a shaft, 75', which is journaled in the side frames, h, and-forms the driving member of the combination. as to be disengaged, while in contact with said cam, from the said wheel, h, whence it results that the continuous motion of the gear, hf, gives only an intermittent motion to the pulleys, if, and the parts ,operated'thereby. The gear, h, is rigidly connected with a sprocket wheel, k, which is free to turn on the shaft, h". The sprocket, h, is driven by a chain, b and sprocket, h, from a shaft connected by beveled-gears, h with the shaft 1) aforesaid. Above and co-acting with the belts, W, are stationary rolls, h and between *the pulleys, h aforesaid are disks or rollers, h. The disks, h, project beyond the belts, k and co-act with friction disks, h 5, whose peripheries are covered with soft rubber or other suitable friction material to feed the label forward and down between the rollers, h, h", a guide, it, bein employed to guide the forward end of t e label down between the rollers, h, h, and to direct the saidhibel along the table, 4,. and under the feed rolls, It. The rollers, h", are fast upon a shaft, h, which is driven from the car, h by a train of gears, 11. The operationof the label-feeding devices is as follows Art the periodic operation of the pawl and ratchet mechanism connecting the shaft, h, with the gear, It", the bottom label of the stack is carried by the pulleys and belts. under the rollers, h, and between the feed rolls, h, h, and thence downward between the feed rolls, h, it, along the guides, k and under the feed rolls, h the printed face of'the label being downward. As the pusher a begins to move forward on its operative stroke, and as soon as the cam, a t, releases the roller, h, and allows it to drop, the continuously rotating roller, h, coacting with roller, k feeds the label forward over the bridge piece, a, aforesaid and against a fixed por tion of the machine so that, on the return stroke of the pusher a and the bridge-piece, a, the label is retained in position underneath the wrapper w and the article 7) as shown in Fig. 14;. v
No claim is made herein to the label or sheet feeding mechanism per 86, as the same forms the subject-matter of my pending application filed April 16, 1909, Serial Number 490,313; sheet feeding mechanism.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is '1. In a wrapping machine, the combination of means for holding a packet-of loose leaves, means for removing said leaves, one by one, from the bottom of said packet and feeding them forward, a roller upon which said feeding means deposits said leaves, a
vertical passageway adjacent to said roller, a pusher for pushin articles over said passageway and provi ed with a bridge piece for covering and uncovering said passageway, a drop roller for co-action with the aforesaid roller, means whereby said pusher raises and lowers said drop roller to cause the same to feed the leaves upon said bridge piece while the latter covers said passageway, and means for moving the article through said vertical passageway to fold the leaves about said article.
2. In a wrapping machine, the combination wit-h a plate provided with a vertical passageway, of a pusher for pushing articles over' said'pas'sageway and provided with a bridge-piece for coverin said passa eway at such times, means for feeding a abel or wrapper upon said bridge-piece while the same covers said assagewav, and means for moving the articles through said vertical passageway to fold the leaves about said articles.
3. In awrapping machine, the combination with a plate or table, having avertical passageway therethrough, a pusher for pushing articles over said passageway and provided with abridge-piece for covering said passageway at such time, a sheet-feeding mechanism controlled by said pusher for feeding sheets upon said bridge-piece beneath the articles while said bridge-piece co'vers said passageway, and means for moving the articles through said vertical passageway to fold the-leaves about said articles.
4. In a wrapping machine, the combination with-a plate or table having a vertical passageway therethrough, of a pusher for plac ng art cles over said passageway and provided wlth a bridge-piece for covering .said passageway while so doing, a label or wrapper feeding mechanism provided with a drop roller for feeding said labels or wrappers, a cam connected to and moving with said pusher for lowering and raising 'said drop roller, and means for moving the articles through said vertical passageway to fold the leaves about said articles.
5. The combination with a stack provided with shelves fixed at opposite sides near the bottom thereof and having an opening therethrough at such point, of reciprocatory means for lifting the articles in said stack and depositing another upon said shelves underneath the same.
'6. The combination of a stack. having an opening near the bottom thereof and provided with shelves at opposite sides of said opening, and an end-wise reciprocating lever having a horizontal fulcrum and provided with a table for sustaining the articles in said stack and with a recess for receiving the article and placing the same upon said shelves underneath the articles in said stack, with means for raising and lowering said lever. 7
7. The combination with a stack having an opening near the bottom thereof and provided with shelves at. opposite sides of said opening, of a reciprocatory ram, a .lever fulcrumed on said ram and provided with a table and with a package-receiving depression, a dog for holding said lever in its elevated position, means for releasing said do at the end of the working stroke of the sail? ram, and means for raising said lever at the 'end of the dead stroke of said ram and rengaging it and said dog.
8. The combination with a stack having an opening near the bottom thereof and provided with shelves at opposite sides of said opening,'of a reciprocatory ram, a lever fulcrumed on said ram, and having a package-sustaining table and a package-receiving depression, releasable means connecting the said lever with said ram to release the lever at the end of the working stroke of the ram, and cam devices for lifting the lever to its working position at the end of the deadstroke of the ram.
9. The combination of a stack with an opening near the bottom thereof and pro-' vided with shelves at opposite sides of said opening, of an endwise-movable .lever having a horizontal fulcrum and provided with a package-receiving recess in its upper face and passing through saido ening, releasable means for retaining said recessed end of said lever in its upper or working position and releasing the lever at the end of its working stroke, a cam on the underside of said recessed end of said lever, and a fixed abutment against which said cam strikes at or near the end of the dead stroke of said lever. ' 10., The combination with a stack provided with an opening near the' bottom thereof, of a reciprocatorystacker -lever, means for laying wrapped articles upon said lever, pressure rolls for holding down the articles upon said lever, and a pivoted lever carrying said rolls, whereby said rolls may be thrown out of operative position.
11. The combination With a stack pro vided withshelves at opposite sides thereof and having an opening therethrough at such point, of an endwise-shiftable and rocking lever for lifting the articles in said stack and depositing another upon said shelves underneath such articles.
12. The combination with a stack provided with shelves at opposite sides thereof,
of a lever having a horizontally-movable fulcrum andadapted to raise the articles in said stack and deposit thereunder another article on said shelves, and operating'means therefor.
13. The combination with a stack provided with shelves at opposite sides thereof, of a rocking and endwise movablev lever adapted to lift the articlesin said stack and deposit thereunder another article on said shelvespmeans for moving said lever end- Wise, and means for rocking said lever.
