A package comprises in one form, Fig. 2, a pair of socks 17, 18 stretched over a cardboard insert 11 having the shape of a foot. The insert may be scored transversely at the heel portion to enable the package to be folded. A label may be adhesively secured to the projecting end of the insert or folded over the end of the insert and adhered to the end of the sock 18, or the package may be enclosed in a transparent envelope having its mouth secured by a folded label. Pairs of anklets 22 may be positioned over the sock 18 as shown in Fig. 7. In a second form, Figs. 13 to 15, the insert 71 has parallel sides, the inner sock 76 being positioned with its heel overlying one face of the insert and the outer sock 77 with its heel adjacent one edge of the insert. The latter may be scored at 74a to facilitate folding of the package. Apparatus for facilitating the formation of the package comprises in one form, Figs. 10 and 11, a pair of spaced front support members 46 secured to an adjustable pillar 45 and a pair of overlapping rear support members 47 pivoted on a pin 48 and movable in an anticlockwise direction against the action of a spring 54 by a pedaloperated linkage 56. The insert is positioned between the members and a sock is stretched over them, after which the pedal is depressed to allow the sock to contract into engagement with the insert. The sock and insert are then withdrawn and repositioned between the members and the procedure repeated with the second sock. In a second form, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) the rear support members are movable horizontally under the action of a cam.
