This invention relates to improvements in hosiery packaging.
More particularly, the invention is concerned with packages of the type in which a pair of stockings is wrapped around a card and inserted in an envelope so that the length of the stocking may be seen.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved method for wrapping the stockings on the card and an improved package comprising the card, stockings and outer envelope.
It has been proposed to provide a card with a means for attaching the stockings in a predetermined location preliminary to wrapping the same about the card so as to insure that the top will fall in a position indicating the length of the stocking (Cartier Patent 2,230,559). The present invention contemplates the use of a card without any cut-out or other means for attaching the stocking preliminary to winding, thus simplifying and speeding up the operation of packaging the stockings very materially.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrapping table and pair of stockings laid thereon preparatory to packaging;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the card in place;
Figure 3 shows the first folds of the stockings on the card;
Figure 4 shows the next fold;
Figure 5 and 6 show, respectively, the back and front of the card, with the folding of the stocking completed;
Figure 7 shows the insertion of the card and stockings in the envelope; and
Figure 8 shows the completed package.
The wrapping table, as shown in Figure 1, is marked with a line I against which the heel 2 of the pair of stockings 3 is set, preliminary to wrapping. Line 4 is spaced from line I by a suitable distance d, which with the card used in the example disclosed, may be 7 inches. The card 5 is now placed with one edge over line 4, as shown in Figure 2, and the ankle and foot are folded over the card as shown in Figure 3. The next fold, as shown in Figure 4, brings the upper part of the stocking over the foot and the last fold brings the top of the stocking over the reverse of the card,
as shown in Figure 5, so that the upper edge or selvage is positioned as shown in Figure 6. With a card 9%" long, a stocking measuring 26" from heel to top will just reach the fold line 10 (Figure 6) and hence the distance a; will equal the excess of the stocking over 26". The envelope l l, accordingly, may be marked in inches as indicated in Figure 8. The center of the envelope of Figure 8 is preferably transparent and the scale indicia along the edges are preferably printed, along with any desired trade-marks or other material.
As indicated in Figure 7, the envelope may be sealed except at one end and have a sealing flap I2 which is turned over and joined to the envelope after inserting the card and stockings.
What is claimed is:
1. The method of packaging stockings which comprises laying a pair of stockings flat on a surface having a mark against which the heel is placed and a mark spaced therefrom by a predetermined distance, placing a card of predetermined length upon the pair of stockings with one end against the second said mark, folding the foot and ankle of the pair of stockings over on top of the card around the end against the said mark, folding the upper part of the stockings over around the opposite end of the card and folding the top of the stocking over the first mentioned end of the card, whereby the upper edge of the stockings will occupy a position on the card determined by the length of the stockings, and inserting the card with the stockings wrapped thereon in an envelope having a transparent area and scale indicia for indicating the length of the stocking according to the position of its top edge with reference to the indicia.
2. The method according to claim 1, in which the feet are folded back over the ankles of the stockings.
