Description
Aug. 8, 1961 F. R. SHARP 4 2,994,886
NECKTIE Filed Sept. 15, 1958 INVENTOR. F1250 1Q. 5M4 ep United States Patent 2,994,886 NECKTIE Fred R. Sharp, 120 W. Fredricks St., Barstow, Calif.
Filed Sept. 15, 1958, Ser. No. 761,134 1 Claim. (Cl. 2--'146) This invention relates to improvements in neckties of the four-in-hand type and more particularly to neckties that are provided with indicating means positioned thereon whereby the tying of the necktie may be achieved so that both ends of the necktie will be even.
An object of this invention is to provide a necktie having indicating means thereon whereby the tying of the necktie is simple and accurate.
Another object of this invention is to provide a necktie that is provided with one set of indicating means that is positioned on the broad end thereof so that such indicating means is visible to the one tying the tie.
A further object of this invention is to provide a necktie having indicating marks thereon to enable the one tying the necktie to achieve a perfect knot and even tie ends withou repeated tyings to achieve the same.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of a necktie with the back surface of the necktie turned toward the front to show the indicating means thereon that will enable the necktie to be tied with a perfect knot and even ends;
FIG. 2 is a view of the back surface of a necktie showing the indicating means thereon and with the small end of the necktie in alinement with one of the indicating means;
FIG. 3 is a view of the back surface of a necktie in extended position;
FIG. 4 is a partial view of the back surface of a necktie showing one form of indicating means;
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4, showing another form of indicating means; and
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIGS. 4 and 5, showing another form of indicating means.
Referring more in detail to the drawing wherein like parts are designated by like reference numerals, the reference numeral 10 is used to designate a necktie of the four-in-hand type.
The necktie 10 comprises a body 11 of any suitable material, of any desired color and having any desired design embodied thereon. The body 11 of the necktie 10 has a broad end portion 12 and a narrow end portion 13 and the ends of the end portions 12 and 13 are provided with points 14 and 15, respectively.
The body of the necktie 10 has a longitudinally extending seam 16 on the rear or back surface 17 thereof.
Positioned on the back surface 17 of the necktie 10 are a plurality of indicating means which may consist of triangular shaped tabs 18, 19 and 20, FIG. 5, or rectangular shaped tabs 21, 22 and 23, FIG. 4.
The tabs 18 and 21 have the letter F positioned thereon, the tabs 19 and 22 have the letter O positioned thereon and the tabs 20 and 23 have the letter W positioned thereon.
In the form of indicating means shown in FIG. 5, the tabs 18, 19 and 20 extend in the same direction laterally of the seam 16 and are inserted within the seam 16 when the necktie 10 is manufactured.
In the form of indicating means shown in FIG. 4, the tab 21 extends in one direction laterally of the seam 16, while the tabs 22 and 23 extend in the opposite direction Patented Aug. 8, 1961 laterally of the seam 16, and the tabs are inserted within the seam 16 when the necktie 10 is manufactured.
In FIG. 6 the indicating means may include a single mark 24, a double mark 25 and a triple mark 26 and these marks may be woven or applied by a sewing machine as desired, and the marks 24, 25 and 26 extend in the same direction laterally of the seam 16.
When the necktie 10 is manufactured, the amount of material that is needed for tying various knots: is computed. The computation includes the two and one-half to three inches distance from the open part of the collar when the knot is tied. Thus, after such computations, the indicating means are applied to the rear surface 17 of the broad end portion 12 of the necktie 10.
Thus, when the narrow end portion 13 is pulled down until the end '15 is even with one of the indicating means, the desired knot may be tied. When the desired knot is tied at the required distance from the open part of the collar and then slipped into position, the pointed ends 14 and 15 of the necktie 10 will be even.
The letter F and the single mark 24 is for the simple four-in-hand knot. The letter O and the double mark 25 are for knots that are variations of the four-in-hand knot and the letter W and the triple mark 26 are used in tying the Windsor knot.
By using the afroementioned indicating means a perfect knot of the desired shape is always tied and the ends 14 and 15 of the necktie 10 will always be even.
While several forms of indicating means have been i1- lustrated, it is to be noted that tabs of different shapes may also be used. Other means than weaving or sewing may also be used to apply the marks of FIG. 6 as well as indicating means of other various shapes and sizes.
There has thus been described a highly eflicient and simple arrangement for necktie whereby a perfect knot and even ends are always achieved and it is believed that from such description the structure and manner of use of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, it is also to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
The combination of a necktie of the four-in-hand type having a broad end portion and a narrow end portion, and a longitudinally extending seam on the back surface thereof, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced indicating means positioned on the back surface thereof so that said means extend laterally of the seam and the end of said narrow portion may be positioned in selective alinement with said indicating means to permit perfect tying of a knot in said necktie, and said indicating means comprise rectangular shaped tabs of varying sizes with certain of said tabs extended in one direction laterally of said seam and with the remainder of said tabs extended in the opposite direction laterally of said seam, all of the tabs on the same side of the seam being of difierent sizes so that the particular tab and its function may be determined by touch alone.
