Abstract
712,754. Compound sheet materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 19, 1952 [March 20, 1951; Aug. 31, 1951], Nos. 6635/51 and 20572/51. Class 140 Rigid, laminar, non-metallic articles of sandwich construction,-such as radomes, having two or more thicknesses of lightweight core material, e.g. cellular material of the honeycomb type or expanded hard rubber, between two outer layers of skin material such as. woven glass fabric, are made by laying on complementary female and male moulds 4, Fig. 2, and 5, Fig. 3, layers of skin material 1, 2. and at least one thickness of core material 3a, 3c, and consolidating the laminµ with a cement, and then associating and consolidating the two portions by. using a cement between. the adjacent core layers of the two portions. The cement may be a polyester synthetic resin cured under heat and pressure. Each outer skin may comprise several layers of woven glass cloth impregnatedwith such a synthetic resin. The layers. of skin material may be first assembled together with an additional layer of skin material, hot-pressed to cure the synthetic resin impregnant, and the additional layer is peeled off. The core, material is bonded to the surface thus exposed, and the whole is bonded to a complementary part similarly produced. When honeycomb core material is employed, a layer of textile material may be added between each pair of core layers.
